Douche of the Month: the United States Government and the Department of Homeland inSecurity

Op-ed piece by K.M. Nevel

The wide open "unsecured" southern border with Mexico remains one of the biggest threats to the security and sovereignty of the United States of America that our nation has ever known. It is estimated that some 12 million illegal aliens call the U.S. home and that another three quarters of a million more arrive every year. With the non-stop flood of those illegal aliens also comes human trafficking, the smuggling of large quantities of drugs and weapons, the rise of violent gangs like MS-13, the ever-present threat of large scale terrorism (including the smuggling of NBC weapons) and the spread of communicable diseases like TB and leprosy.

Also consider: the FBI/DHS recently warned that the threat of IED's in the United States is growing violence directed at Border Patrol agents working the southern border is increasing increased indicators that fanatical Muslim groups may be teaming up with Latin American gangs to smuggle people, drugs, weapons and Lord knows what else into our great country recent testimony before Congress that a nuclear attack on U.S. soil is "more likely than not" in the next decade corrupt Mexican Army and law enforcement officials "routinely" cross into the U.S., often providing security for drug smugglers and human traffickers In 2006, the Secure Fence Act was passed, requiring some 700 miles of reinforced fencing, technological assets and vehicle barriers along the U.S./Mexico border. To date, less than 75 miles of the fence has been completed and only five miles of that is double-layered. And now, since DHS has thus fair failed to complete the border fence, U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina) has introduced the “Complete the Fence Act," which would require DHS to provide a progress report to Congress by June, 2009, and still complete the 700 miles of pedestrian fencing by December, 2010. The "Complete the Fence Act" does not permit so-called "virtual fencing" or vehicle barriers to be used, instead.

Now, politics is certainly the main reason that nothing is being done. It's an election year, and all three of the remaining candidates for President of the United States are/will be courting the Latino vote. And it certainly can be said that most Democrats in office - and some Republicans - are against ever building the fence and completely overhauling our entire approach to illegal immigration and border control.

Recent amendments to the Secure Fence Act, proposed by Democrats, moved to nullify the must build aspect of the bill, giving all discretion to the DHoS Secretary, instead. As usual, votes are more important than national security. They don't call it politics for nothing. But it should also be said that an overwhelming majority of Americans want the fence built, want immigration laws enforced, want criminal aliens deported and want the government to address the problem immediately.

Enter the Department of Homeland Security and Secretary Michael Chertoff.

Mr. Chertoff - and by extension, the United States Government - prefers a "virtual fence," one that uses technology like cameras and motion sensors to detect illegal activity along the border and then directs Border Patrol assets into the area for enforcement. Mr. Chertoff insists that his agency is "serious about immigration enforcement" and was the one of the more vocal forces behind the Bush/Kennedy/McCain "Amnesty" bill that failed horribly last year.

But now, the first twenty-eight miles of their precious "virtual fence" has been found to be "unworkable" by the GAO, which specifically blamed the DoHS for rushing forward with "a product that did not fully meet user needs." It seems that Mr. Chertoff and his people failed to consult with the Border Patrol on the construction of the project and now the project has been delayed at least three years, pushing completion back to 2012.

Are you sick yet? If you aren't, this last bit is for you.

Despite the huge border security mess in our own backyard, the White House is pressing forward with a $1.4 billion foreign-aid package to Mexico called the 'Merida Initiative,' designed to help them protect their southern border against the flow of illegal aliens from South America. Unbelievable, isn't it? Especially when you consider a) the rampant corruption at all levels of the Mexican Government and b) illegal aliens from South America are most likely just passing through to - you guessed it - the United Sates.

It's time for Americans to stand up and demand that the federal government finally secure our borders and protect this nation from those that wish us harm. In an era where a nuclear, biological or chemical attack could literally kill tens of thousands of our citizens, doing nothing is no longer an option.
