If Patton was an officer today, he'd be relieved of duty for being too much of a bad ass.
Patton, the very first armor officer in history, is certainly loaded with controversy - once slapping a soldier who had battle fatigue for showing signs of weakness and often disregarding the wishes of superiors - but he is best known, and loved, for his raw aggression and tactical and logistics genius.
While many of his battles are of astounding historical importance, his success at the Battle of the Bulge is one of the greatest military feats in history. When the Germans led a last ditch 29 Division attack on the Allied forces, elements of the 101st and 10th Infanty Divisions were trapped by German forces in the city of Bastogne, barely holding their perimeter. Time was scarce and many felt it would be weeks before reinforcements could arrive.
Patton, ever fearless in command, turned his 250,000 force around and fought with reckless abandon towards the surrounded troops at Bastogne. 6 days later they were relieved.
He wasn't lovable. He wasn't cute. He wasn't PC.
But the man was freakin' effective.
He demanded one simple thing from every man around him:
Lead Me, Follow Me, or get the hell out of my way!
