Fire causes a visceral reaction in us.
A huge overwhelming fear.
It is against human nature to be near fire and certainly to enter fire, for doing so is to risk not just death, but death in the most painful way imaginable.
That is why it is so amazing to watch our firefighters brave that threat every day. The have the same feeling of fear that we do. Their skin tingles against the oppressive heat, their hair singes, their lungs struggle for breath, even through their fogged up masks, yet they stride into harmís way.
For that reason, firefighters have our undying respect. They ignore fear and risk all so that others may live.
They have earned the right to say:
The difference between you and me is that I run towards the fire.
